Describe each unit with a few words and show the age if known. If there are significant lateral variations in thickness or stratigraphy, you may wish to illustrate this by drawing more than one stratigraphic column.

Limited information on lithologies
A stratigraphic column should be drawn with a designated and clear vertical scale to show each of your mapping units in their correct stratigraphic order with the litho-stratigraphic names you have given them. The thickness of each formation should be proportional to the stratigraphic thickness of the unit which you have determined from the least deformed part of your crosssection, and a scale with 0m at the base should be clearly shown.

The stratigraphic columns often have inadequate information. Enough information should be provided on the column section and map so that they can be understood without reference to the report (e.g. include formation names, ages, limited information on lithologies, etc.).

In tectonically thinned sequences you should use the section that shows least deformation to calculate your formation thicknesses
